Sexy ’60s style
Instead of wearing your sweater over a shirt, which can be a bit boring and too preppy, skip the shirt thing and wear the cardigan with nothing underneath this autumn. This was one of the ways that Mary Tyler Moore used to wear her cardigans. The famous actress starred one of the most feminist shows in the ’70s, The Mary Tyler Moore Show. This photo was taken around that time, with fellow actress Valery Harper.
Unbutton French style
The cute cardigan is the hero piece in transitional wardrobes, and it looks great paired with wide-legged denim or with pleated skirts. If you want to get that French “je ne sais quoi”, do as Jeanne Damas, the influencer and owner of the brand Rouje. The way to wear a sweater this fall is to unbutton the first and last two or three buttons. A super simple styling trick that makes your outfit sexy and effortless. Additionally, it will give the impression you’re wearing a cropped cardigan, one of the trends this fall.
Hanging off the shoulder
Olivia Palermo adds some sexiness to her chunky sweater taking the French styling trick to the next level. By leaving the top buttons undone and the cardigan hanging off her shoulder, she lets the lacey top peek out. The olive green is perfect for fall.
Hailey Biber is another model who wears oversized cable-knit sweaters off one shoulder in a cool and effortless manner.
Matchy-matchy cardigan set
Katie Holmes almost broke the internet with one of the new ways to wear a sweater. She appeared in a cashmere cardigan and bra set that was soon copied by many. We suggest you match your cardigan with a wide bandeau or cropped top in the same material this fall so that you don’t need to walk around like her, with the arms crossed trying not to flash too much skin.
Give your sweater a new look
One of the ways to update your favourite fall sweaters is to wear a removable Peter Pan collar. As we saw during Fashion Week, these statement collars are a trend that will keep going strong throughout fall and winter.
Wide Peter Pan collars add contemporaneity to both cropped sweaters or chunky cardigans. If your cardigan is long enough, consider wearing it as a dress for fall, with tights and boots. Add a belt if you want a more structured silhouette.
Why wear one when you can wear two?
Fall is the layering season by excellence. So why not do like Olivia Palermo and wear two cardigans instead of only one? Add a chunky cable knit sweater over a cropped cardigan for a cosy look. Layer them over a sexy slip dress or top embellished with lace to put together a contemporary outfit; sexy but comfortable. Palermo’s striped orange sweater is super on-point since Amberglow is one of the fashion colours trends for fall that Eckhaus Latta, Hermès and Michael Kors showed in their A/W catwalk shows.
