The Luxury Industry’s Game of Musical Chairs

Why We Made This Video

The game of musical chairs in fashion was so intense at the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025 that no one seems to know who is working where anymore. That’s why we’ve come to your rescue with this video: a clear guide to the fashion creative directors of 2025 and which luxury house they are steering right now.

The Signature vs the Maison

Spotting each designer’s style isn’t always instant. Creative directors have their own signature, of course, but they also carry the responsibility of honouring a brand’s history and evolution. That’s why most of them make their very first pit stop in the archives.

Well, almost everyone. Alessandro Michele jumped straight from Gucci to Valentino and skipped the archival immersion. His Valentino collections are essentially Alessandro-core, brilliantly original, yes, but hardly referencing Valentino’s heritage. As a fan, I must admit: he’s unique, but not exactly faithful to the maison’s culture.

Talent Lost in Transition

2025 also saw many designers stepping down without a new post to move into. The industry, facing both financial and ethical crises, simply isn’t absorbing all the talent it produces. A striking example is Hedi Slimane. After seven years at Celine, Slimane had turned the brand into one of LVMH’s greatest success stories, with revenues approaching €2.5 billion. Celine became the group’s third powerhouse, right after Louis Vuitton and Dior.

So what went wrong? At the start of 2024, as his contract expired, negotiations between Bernard Arnault’s group and Slimane collapsed. Hedi demanded a “historically high salary” and royalties “on all manner of creative output”. He wanted complete creative control, from collections to shows, from stores to client relations.

What’s Next for Hedi Slimane?

That, we still don’t know. While his next move remains a mystery, what we do know is who holds the reins of today’s luxury houses. Watch our video on the fashion creative directors of 2025 and see for yourself who’s shaping the future of fashion.
