Sakai

This restaurant, located in the 8th District, serves a delicious Sunday brunch with a variety of Japanese delicacies. The chef takes you in a gourmet tour of Japan, presenting the culinary specialities of Sapporo, Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka, and Sakai’s New Year menu is quite fantastic too

Kuishimbo

The tiny family-run restaurant on the Wienzeile, Kuishimbo, serves authentic Japanese dishes in a cosy, but a bit claustrophobic, atmosphere; it only seats eight people! It is a big favourite among Viennese food-lovers who go there to have the delicious Udon soup, crunchy seaweed salad or the famous deep-fried eggplant dish, the Nasu no Agebitashi. The service couldn’t be nicer too

Shokudo Kuishimbo

This restaurant is the bigger sister of Kuishimbo. Although always crowded, you may actually find a table to seat and enjoy traditional home-made Japanese cuisine at an affordable price. Better make a reservation before.

Nihonbashi

Located in the heart of Vienna, on the Kärntner Straße, the restaurant serves fantastic sushis, sashimis and typical Japanese sweets. There are a basement sake bar and private karaoke boxes where you can sing your heart out without the embarrassment of doing so in front of strangers ;

Hidori

For many, this is where you get the best sushi in Vienna. Otherwise, you should have the chef’s special menu that comes with four dishes so that you can try a bit of everything. And the kitchen closes at 11 pm, which is quite late for Vienna

Mochi

Although a bit pricey, the small restaurant on the Praterstrasse is always packed because of its delicious Asian fusion food and friendly staff. Better book ahead.

OKRA Izakaya

Located in the trendy Karmeliterviertel in the 2nd district, the restaurant’s Okra Kobashi sharing food follows the sharing principle by placing the dishes in the centre of the table so that everyone can taste everything. The cuisine is contemporary Japanese, and the chef and staff are super friendly. They also have sake tastings and Japanese cooking classes.

Shiki

Also in the 1st district, the one Michelin star restaurant mixes contemporary and authentic Japanese cuisine with a European touch.

Ganko

A tiny restaurant with only three tables and an open kitchen where the chef prepares all types of meat to be grilled, as in Japan, including belly meat and swine uterus! When you walk by the restaurant, the smell coming from the grill is so delicious, it is hard not to be tempted to try. The chef Zaw Zaw Tun worked at Do&Co catering and Mochi for several years before opening his Ganko.
