February 3, 2022

Timeless handbags from heritage brands are forever classics. But, Spring/Summer 2022 brings us a myriad of new trends, including old favourites revisited like bucket bags, Crescent Moon totes, and modern iterations of retro designs that give the nod to the 1920s, the ’90s, and Y2K. Additionally, sustainable materials and bright colours will reign supreme this year. So, read our complete guide on the new bag trends to get a head start on your spring/summer 2022 collection.

Crescent Moon bag trend

The chic structured handbags from the ’90s come with a curved shape that looks like a crescent moon. J.W.Anderson, Bottega Veneta, and Loewe are some of the many luxury brands presenting these elevated totes at Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2022. Miu Miu’s take on this trend comes in bright-coloured matelassé re-nylon, an eco-friendly recycled material.

Our Tip: These bags look fantastic day or night, so you can wear them with extra-wide jeans and a white tee or with a silver minidress to go out.

Say hello to bucket bags, again

Bucket bags are back in 2022.

The cute bucket bags added femininity to runway looks at Tory Burch, Versace, Michael Kors, and Louis Vuitton. Needless to say, bucket bags and spring are a match made in heaven, and we’ll see them next season in all sizes and materials.

Our tip: Add a touch of girliness with a bucket bag to the Bermuda shorts trend you will wear this spring and summer.

‘90s minimalist shoulder bags

Classic shoulder bags with minimalist designs inspired by the ’90s aesthetic will be one of the significant trends for Spring/Summer 2022. We saw them on the runways at Miu Miu, Prada, Bottega Veneta, Gucci, and Peter Do. The high style of these handbags will undoubtedly be a hit among the chic Old-Céline women, right on time for Phoebe Philo’s comeback.

Our Tip: These sophisticated bags are the perfect complement to sleek dresses or power suits we saw at Copenhagen Fashion Week.

XXXL totes to carry all you need and more

With larger-than-life earrings comes the spring/summer XXXL bag trend that will undoubtedly take the streets in 2022. According to Isabel Marant, Fendi, Versace, The Row, Proenza Schouler, and Givenchy, you’ll be able to carry all you need for the day and much more in these statement totes.

Our Tip: Pay attention to the volumes; when carrying a massive bag, better choose clothes with a more fitted silhouette.

The big and soft clutch is here to stay

Bottega Veneta’s chunky, squeezable clutches were an instant hit a few seasons ago, and they’re here to stay. Chloé, Jonathan Simkhai, and Blumarine have also revisited the chic clutch, creating big purses that are soft enough to squeeze them under your arm. As a result, the creased oversized bags add a touch of nonchalance and effortless chicness typical of French women like, for example, Sylvie Grateau in Emily in Paris.

Our Tip: Use an oversized clutch to elevate basic looks and LBDs for a meeting or meet friends for lunch.

Bags that double as belts and necklaces

Keep your hands free with these bags that you will wear around your neck or waist. Either multipurpose belt bags (yes, they’re back in 2022) or small cellphone case necklaces, you can easily update your spring/summer wardrobe with the practical trend we saw at Gucci, Ulla Johnson, and Altuzarra.

Our Tip: Have fun with this trend and wear several bags at once as if you were layering necklaces. Belt and necklace bags make any look instantly contemporary.

Wristlets, the bags that double as bracelets

TikTok keeps influencing fashion; hence the wristlets that were a thing in the Y2K are back as a popular bag trend for spring/summer 2022. Luxury houses like Chanel, Fendi, and Salvatore Ferragamo sent models down the runway with tiny bags dangling wrapped around their wrists like bracelets.

Our Tip: Although you won’t carry much in the tiny bags, they bring a holiday vibe to city outfits. Additionally, you can create a new silhouette for oversized blazers by wrapping the strap over the sleeve.

Bowling bags, the retro trend revisited.

Another Y2K trend that has made its way back for spring/summer 2022 is bowling bags. According to Lyst, the search for these small structured bowling bags has increased 29% over the past two weeks, especially Prada’s bowling tote. Miuccia Prada has revisited the classic bowling bag several times over the years, which has become an iconic model of the Italian luxury fashion house. Of course, we’ve also seen this trend on the runway at Givenchy, Christian Dior, and Bottega Veneta, so don’t be afraid of investing in the stylish retro tote.

Our Tip: Pair the playful bowling bag with the ’60s skirt-suit trend we’ll see this spring.

The 1920s-inspired bags

As you already read, the Roaring Twenties inspire fashion, bringing back the glamour of the Jazz Era. So, naturally, bags also come embellished with fringes and feathers in the best 1920s trend for spring/summer 2022. And, of course, you’ll see several ones with raffia fringes, perfect for sunny days. Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Lanvin, and Emilio Pucci are some of the luxury fashion houses presenting eye-catching handbags in Flapper style. By the way, did you know that Flapper shoes were a symbol of women’s empowerment?

Our Tip: Don’t be shy and combine a fringed skirt with an equally fringed bag. The same goes with feathers. Let spring 2022 be opulent!

Heavy metal embellishments

Silver metal embellished bags are among the trends for spring/summer 2022.

We’ve seen handbags embellished with chunky metal chains becoming more and more popular. As a result, bags with silver hardware invaded S/S22 Fashion Week shows. In fact, silver is back as one of the top jewellery trends we’ll wear in 2022. Blumarine, Gucci, Alexander McQueen, and Sonya Lee are among the brands embracing this trend.

Our Tip: Wear several bold silver bangles to accentuate the metal embellishment on your bag.

Slow-fashion bags for the crafts-lover fashionista

The bohemian artisanal trend isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and colourful bags in natural materials and hand-made styles are a must for spring-summer 2022. The brand Tassel Tales, for example, makes unique colourful bags upcycling Moroccan vintage carpets and surplus materials with a bohemian vibe perfect for your inner flower-child. We saw J.W Anderson knitted woven shoppers, Prada’s knotted cord totes, and Chloé’s macramé bags on the runway.

Our Tip: Avoid wearing boho maxi dresses with artisanal bags unless you’re planning to backpack in the hippie trail. Balance your look by combining a knitted crochet bag with polished outfits to get a cool result.

Polished Croco handbags to elevate spring outfits

Polished mock-croc bags are trends in spring/summer 2022.

The luxurious Croco-embossed texture we used to see in winter comes now as a spring/summer trend, meaning mock croc bags have become seasonless and will be everywhere in 2021. So, even though fashion is celebrating the Year of the Tiger, crocodiles will invade the streets, from sleek, utilitarian cross-body models like Anine Bring’s Colette Bag to Balenciaga’s crescent-moon purses.

Our Tip: Consider embracing a bourgeois vibe by wearing your bag with jeans, a white shirt, and loafers. Then, do like the cool Scandinavian girls and tie a scarf on your head. Et voilá, you’re ready to hit the streets in style. Additionally, Mock-croc handbags make your outfits look more expensive and put together.
