Pantone 2022: The colour of the year and its meaning Can fashion predict the future?

December 14, 2021

At the end of every year, the Pantone Colour Institute reveals the colour of the following year, but 2022 will be unlike any other year. That is because, for the first time, the institute has custom created a new shade. So, the Pantone Colour of the Year 2022 is the brand new Very Peri, “a colour that really places the future ahead in a new light“, explained Laurie Pressman, the company’s VP. Let’s see how Pantone created Very Peri. Then, check the meaning of this new shade and how to wear the colour of the year.

Flowers and gaming

Experts at Pantone made a thorough research and trend forecast before announcing the colour of the year 2022. Consequently, Very Peri is the reflex of what people are looking for and what is happening in the world. Pantone explains that our physical and digital lives have merged in new ways after an intense period of isolation. And as a result, the institute found inspiration for this new hue in both nature and gaming, which seems contradictory. We can find the beautiful shade in periwinkle plants and flowers like lilac and lavender. The soothing purple hue has the calming effect we so need after these past two years. On the other hand, the Pantone Colour of the Year 2022 also refers to the blueish glow of our digital devices, reflecting the growing popularity of gaming and virtual reality during the lockdown.

The meaning of the Colour of the Year 2022

According to Pantone, the colour of the year 2022 is a futuristic hue that “blends the faithfulness and constancy of blue with the energy and excitement of red to introduce an empowering mix of newness.” Additionally, this warm, joyful hue encourages courageous creativity. In other words, it allows unpredictable, whimsical colour combinations, as we’ve already seen on the runways.

Very Peri in fashion

Fashion houses have used quite a lot of lavender and lilac tones lately. Of course, we’ve already seen the colour in A/W 21-22 collections at, for example, Balenciaga, Iris van Herpen, and Valentino Haute Couture. But the Pantone Colour of the Year was also popular on the Spring 2022 runway. From Gucci, Missoni, and Lanvin to Isabel Marant, Saint Laurent, and Louis Vuitton, designers have fabulous looks in Very Peri for 2022.
