Following Hermès steps: clogs are the chicest shoe trend Scandinavian style.

If you were lucky enough to have grown up in the ’80s, or if you can’t get enough of this decade’s style, you’ll be happy to hear that clogs are the chicest shoe trend. And it came to stay for a long time. In fact, thanks to the French luxury fashion house Hermès, the chunky Swedish mules with a wood base are back again, and this time, they are chicer than ever.

Clogs, the ugly shoes we love and hate

The Scandinavian clogs, or sabots, date back to the 1200s, but the clean, minimalistic design makes the practical footwear feel modern. This is why fashion designers have revisited these traditional wooden shoes over and over again. In 2007, the Dutch designers Viktor & Rolf presented heeled clogs in their A/W collection. A few years later, Chanel and Louis Vuitton brought the clogs back for S/S 2010. In other words, these comfortable “ugly shoes” are timeless and seasonless, being worn both in summer and winter with thick socks. Hermès had all the models run down the catwalk wearing clogs at Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2021.

Following nostalgia and cotage-core big trends, with people needing a bit of an escape from reality other fashion designers have also presented fashionable clogs in their latest collections. The LA-based Rosetta Getty, famous for her elevated looks, revisited the Scandinavian clogs giving them a clean Bauhaus take. Likewise, Jacquemus, Céline, Bottega Veneta, and Marni confirmed in their spring/summer collections that clogs are the shoe of the year.

Clogs are still a relatively novel choice of an everyday shoe in comparison to, say, a simple tennis shoe, but that’s the beauty of them.” – Rosetta Getty

You can wear versatile clogs with basically everything. You can try them with suits, dresses, chic midi skirts, jeans, or knitwear separates. Instead of wearing sneakers every day, now you can alternate your smart outfit with clogs.
