Crazy Rich Asians is Celebrating Western Fashion
November 27, 2018
“Crazy Rich Asians” was the must-see movie in fall and if you haven´t watched it, you for sure should! The romantic comedy, which is based on the eponymous novel, tells the story of an NYU professor that follows her boyfriend to Singapore just to find out that his family is one of the richest in the country. She then has to deal with his critical relatives and concomitant prejudice.
Apart from being highly praised for the performance, the movie also received amazing criticism for the stunning costumes. The characters wear designers like Valentino, Elie Saab, Marchesa, Christian Dior and many other big names. Fashion plays a significant role in the film as it portrays the upper class and their wealth, and at the same times makes fun of it. Mary E. Vogt, the movie´s costume designer, chose the outfits precisely and according to each character´s nature and watching the film from a fashion point of view is probably not less interesting than looking at a runway show.
As we already mentioned in our article about the recent Dolce & Gabbana éclat, the Asian market is extremely powerful, and luxury goods are selling very well there (as “Crazy Rich Asians” is perfectly showing). Contrary to D&´s campaign that is (deliberately) thinking in stereotypes and kind of mocking the Asian culture and their peculiarities, the movie shows that especially the elite there is more western than one might think.
